To the Birnbaum Family and Friends of David Birnbaum, My name is Yann Conan, I am a French radio amateur, Dave Birnbaum was an excellent friend of mine. I met him "on the air" in Morse code in 1986, I was then a young radio amateur, my call sign is F5LAW, Dave's was W8KV. We took to each other immediately. He was a resourceful and talented person, he had an excellent command of several foreign languages. We shared a common passion for jazz, literature, radiotelegraphy among other fields. Since this first contact, we often bumped into each other on the air, we exchanged lots of letters, emails, CDs and books. These past few months we established a regular rendezvous on the air on week days. Our last contact took place on June 17, exactly a month before his passing. It's so cruel to know that I'll no longer hear him calling me on the air: "F5LAW de W8KV + K"; nor read "Hola mon cher Yann", that's the way he used to start his emails. He knew French so well, but it was really funny that he used "Hola" - he did it to make me laugh - and that I did. I so enjoyed his friendship and companionship! Our deepest sympathy to David Birnbaum's family and friends, Adieu mon cher ami Dave, you'll be terribly missed my friend. Sincerely, Yann Conan and the Conan Family.
